Today was the introduction to a unit on fluids. I wanted to dig through their existing knowledge so the class was given the prompt
On a whiteboard, briefly write out what you know about particles, matter, atoms, states of matter, solids, liquids, gases…
The class pretty much sorted out these ideas with minimal intervention from me. This kind of work is much more enjoyable than having kids read 3 pages from a textbook and answer some textbook questions. A reflection or summary at the end of the class would be ideal for formative assessment.
